Guildenstern's Website. That way you can program in different channels if you want later. Here they are:. I tuned my Rugged to a frequency and the BaoFeng to a different frequency and viola! They were talking. I tried to program my Baofeng with the Rugged software and failed. I may go get the Baofeng software to see if I can come up with a setup to clone them with the pre-set Lemons frequencies.
They barely work properly then, but they are NOT designed to transmit in the s. They bleed all over the spectrum with un quenched harmonics.
I was mostly going to use the BaoFeng to have more people to be able to walk around and monitor the frequency. The two-way talk for the crew chief and driver will be using our the two Rugged radios. We should have one and share it it would seem. Yes, I know - you give a mouse a cookie and they ask for a glass of milk. The subcode is the sub-audible signal transmitted with the voice signal.
The receiving radio looks for that specific low frequency tone or digital code and only opens squelch turns on the speaker when it see the correct tone. It's sometimes called a "privacy code", but it doesn't provide any privacy.
It just keeps you from hearing other people's transmissions.
Manufacturers can't even agree on the name, let alone the numbering, so you need to know the actual frequency or code. It's worth noting that the UV-5R is basically an outlaw radio. It is sold as a "Part 90" rules radio. And it's not actually compliant with even those loose rules on Part 90 frequencies because it can be trivially programmed from the keypad for higher power and non-permitted modulation.
The combination of arbitrary keypad programming frequency, modulation, offsets and power and detachable antenna also make it not certifiable for most other radio services, except for ham radio where the operators are supposed to know the technical details of what is allowed. Not that anyone will come after you for operating a modest power handheld radio, as long as you keep away from frequencies licensed to other users.
As others have said, the Baofeng radios can be programmed to a wide range of frequencies in both VHF and UHF bandssome of which are reserved for licensed use for such things as business, fire, police and ambulance services.Note: It's a RT82 alternative firmware, beta version, mainly for hams. So think twice before you download and upgrade. We will continue to improve it.

Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming.
The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio unlike Motorola.

CHIRP is distributed as a series of automatically-generated builds. Thus, CHIRP is versioned by the date on which it was created, which makes it easy to determine if you have an older build. We don't put experimental things into CHIRP before they are ready, except where specifically called out with a warning.
Thus, you do not need to worry about finding a stable version to run. You should always be on the latest build available. Just install the new one and it will replace the existing copy! You can find a complete test report of the current build here and a matrix of supported models and features here.
Click here to download the latest Windows version. Click here to download the latest Mac OS X version. MacOS Unified Application build is now the recommended way. More useful tidbits can be found at MacOS Tips. If you are using Ubuntu linux or a compatible variant such as Mint you should install and use the PPA like this:. After installing the build from the PPA, new updates will be included in your normal system software updates.
Also see the Running on Linux page for additional steps required to gain access to your serial port. Click here to download the latest version. If you don't run a distro for which we have packages, you can run CHIRP right from the tarball available through the link above. Most modern distributions should have almost everything required to run chirp. Make sure you have python-serial and python-libxml2 packages installed.

CHIRP supports a large number of radios including:. The RT Systems software supports a much larger array of radios:. While I am generally in favor of open source software I have found the end to end solution of RT Systems to be helpful.
I am using their cable and software solution on two of my radios and will be adding more at some point. I do wish chirp offered the ico H. When I asked about it, I was sent a pretty short email with no answer. Would be super helpful of chirp would add the icom H to its list of radios. RT Systems is a Windows only solution.
Never heard of them before, probably will forget in less than 10 minutes. I have never heard of RT Systems before now. CHIRP allows me to copy the same programming to all of them. Thats an improvement over Kenwoods software which did not allow that. I run both Mac and Windows in my shack. So the supported platforms are to me a non issue. So RT Systems is my choice. For all of my radios. It always works without a hassle as a result of the right combination of hard and software.
I have used RT systems software for years and have found it very useful. I like the inclusion of using Travel Plus files to aet up the memory on the radios in my vehicles and their technical support is excellent. That same cable will also program at least two other models of Yaesu mobiles. But I can also say that some versions of RT Systems software I had for some older Yaesu HTs had some miserable copy protection on it and that was not a good user experience either.
If you want your radio supported, maybe you need to loan it to the developers, or else learn enough Python to build support for it yourself. How about the Firefox web browser? That is exactly what makes open source software tacky.
And unstable. Too many know-it-all guys poking in other peoples code. Pretending they know better. In the end a project is unmaintainable and ready for the trash bin.CHIRP Programming Tutorial with the Baofeng UV-5R UV5R : How To: Eye-On-Stuff

RT Systems invented amateur radio programming in when the Yaesu FT "cloned" and we wondered if we could get it to talk to a computer instead of another radio RT Systems provides a system that works!
The system includes an RT Systems Programmer designed specifically for your radio nothing extra to wade through and a RT Systems USB cable designed to work with your radio and eliminate com port setup. If you already have the correct RT Systems cable for the software, you can purchase and download the RT Systems programmer directly to your computer and use it to program your new radio immediately. You can even copy and paste details from one programmer to another so the file started for the new radio can be ready to go in minutes!
The Programmer brings ALL the features of the radio to the computer screen where they are easily managed. RT Systems has been at the forefront of amateur radio programming software since when we introduced the first radio programmer for the Yaesu FT The fact that you have now transported many of your apps over to the Mac OS is a real big deal for me. Way to go RT Systems, keep up the outstanding work. The download and installation only took a few minutes and within 15 minutes I was entering data.
This software is very cool, I spent the afternoon downloading repeaters from the Repeater Base to RT Systems and then to my radio for an upcoming RV trip. Thank you for making this process such an easy experience, it makes me feel very empowered that I can talk to my radio all by myself.
All I can say is WOW! What fabulous customer service and products! I must have called RT Systems tech support seven or eight times with questions or asking for help. Customer Service and product quality are the two things that can make or break a company.
The level of service provided by Domenic and Matt give will keep me coming back. This is one less cable I am hauling out in the woods and one less connection needed. Now I want to order more so that I can do away with the third party cables and utilize my RT cables. The really cool thing about my investment in your products is the Customer Service. Every time I have had a question, issue, suggestion or inquiry, you all have been right there as if I was your only customer.
That just affirms my choice in choosing RT Systems products. After purchasing a RT Systems cable and software kit everything worked great! It took more time for my computer to start up than it did to get the software and cable to work.
